A healthy baby girl successfully gave birth on Camps Bay beach in Cape Town this weekend. A young mother unexpectedly gave birth and City emergency staff and volunteers were on hand to help.
BEACH BABY BORN IN CAMPS BAY
Cape Town said the baby made an unexpected arrival at Camps Bay beach on Sunday January 2.
At around 11:15 a.m., an Identikidz staff member was invited to help a young woman who had given birth.
Volunteers – Marylin Afrika, Rahdee Salie, Judith Henn and Aaliyah Anthony – responded and saw that the mother was already far enough along, as the baby’s head from the beach was already crowning.
“The team then helped the mom deliver the baby and made sure the mom and baby could wait undisturbed until the paramedics arrived,” the City said.
Cape Town’s MayCo Safety and Security member JP Smith said the surprise birth brought some extra zest for life.
“We congratulate our volunteers for keeping their cool under the pressure and helping the mom deliver. Our people are proven to help bring new life to the world, ”said Smith.
He recalled that a pair of disaster management staff helped deliver another baby on Camps Bay beach about five years ago.
Smith said on the occasion that the newborn was a baby boy, who was later named after one of the staff who helped the mother deliver.
