A mum was stunned to see her breast milk change color after she and her baby tested positive for Covid, labeling it ‘liquid green gold’.
Breastmilk is often referred to as “liquid gold” because of its amazing ability to adjust nutrients according to baby’s needs.
Now a mother has shared a striking photo claiming her breast milk has turned a shade of green after she and her baby both tested positive for Covid-19, Kidspot reports.
Mum-of-two Ashmiry shared a photo of two packets of breast milk before and after contracting the virus.
The white milk on the left was expressed before her daughter caught Covid and the second green tinted milk was after her family fell ill.
She was amazed to see the color change, but also excited because she thought the changes were due to her body producing extra nutrients to feed her daughter.

Ashmiry shared the photo on Instagram last year – and reposted it this week – to show the benefits of breastfeeding.
At the time, Ashmiry, his partner and his one-year-old daughter tested positive for Covid. Her eldest daughter was negative.
“I really wanted to share this photo of my breast milk,” she said with the two pouches side by side.
“It let me know that something was going on in my body and in my babies. How amazing breast milk is. It’s magical and I’m so grateful to be able to produce it especially now!
“The color change indicates that my body is producing exactly what Rubi needs. Antibodies, extra fat and just pure goodness.
When sharing the photo two days ago, she admitted to drinking breast milk when she was sick with Covid-19.
“I was so grateful at that time that I was still breastfeeding,” she said.
“Otherwise, otherwise, I wouldn’t have experienced this or seen what my body was capable of doing for Rubi.
“We all had some of that breast milk. I had my own breast milk. But hey, I got better, I was sick of being sick, so I thought, “I’m going to drink some of that breast milk,” and I did. I don’t know if that helped. Who knows.”
Milk can change color when baby is sick
Lactation consultant Goldilacts shared the image calling the milk ‘liquid green gold’ alongside the message: ‘Our breasts are super-responders’.
“When breastfeeding, our body always performs full body scans of mom and baby and determines exactly what to put in breast milk for babies. [sic] wellness,” they wrote.
Kidspot has previously reported of mothers sharing images of their breast milk turning into a more yellow, colostrum-colored milk when their baby is sick.
The color change is thought to be due to an increase in immunoglobulins, white blood cells and leukocytes – all cells that help fight disease.
A Facebook post from mum Mallory Smothers explained why the color shift can occur.
“When a baby suckles, it creates a vacuum in which the infant’s saliva squeezes into the mother’s nipple,” she writes.
“Here, the receptors in the mammary gland are thought to interpret the ‘backwashing of the baby’s saliva’ for bacteria and viruses and, if they detect something wrong (i.e. say the baby is sick or fighting an infection), mom’s body will actually change the immunological makeup of the milk, adapting it to the baby’s particular pathogens by producing personalized antibodies.
“(Science backs it up. A 2013 clinical and translational immunology study found that when a baby is sick, the number of white blood cells in breast milk increases).”
The Australian Breastfeeding Association also notes that green breast milk can appear after eating large amounts of green or even blue foods such as green vegetables, kelp and other types of seaweed in tablet or concentrate form. of natural vitamins.
