A woman has taken to Reddit to share how she refused to pay for her daughter’s boyfriend’s meal, and many netizens have rallied behind her in support.
Posting to the chat site on January 16 under the account name Unspoken-promise1879, the woman began by revealing that her daughter Christine was 24 and had recently moved back to town after graduating from college.
Christine is currently dating Simon, 30, whose wife “isn’t a huge fan”. She then revealed that she had invited her daughter over for lunch, but the latter arrived with her boyfriend in tow.
It was not what the mother had hoped for and she explained: “The bill came and I told Simon and Christine that I was only paying for me and Christine, Simon asked why and I told him because I had not invited him. “
This upset the young couple, as revealed by Redditor: “She got offended and said they were one and that I should either pay for both or not pay at all. I told her that it wasn’t fair to her and me, but she said no it was unfair to Simon!.
“I asked if he had money to pay and he shook his head no.”
The woman then decided to pay only for herself and left, causing the cash-strapped couple to call a friend to come to the restaurant and pay their share of the bill.
The Redditor continued: “She said she was hurt, Simon is hurt and they expect an apology and the money their friend paid because it’s a debt they have to pay back now.
“I told her it was because of her for bringing an uninvited person with her and then insisting I pay for both or not pay at all.”
Later in the comments, the woman clarified that “Simon is unemployed and Christine is barely able to pay the bills.”
Since the meal caused a rift between mother and daughter, she ended the post by asking if she was being unreasonable and had caused this by “not paying for both.”
The story gained a lot of traction on Reddit, having garnered over 15,600 upvotes.
Additionally, nearly 3,200 people rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts on the woman’s actions, with most offering their support.
Reddit user DeepDarkBlues_96 wrote, “You didn’t invite the boyfriend and your daughter was rude for inviting him over without letting you know.
“Besides, how can a 30-year-old man and a 24-year-old man go out without bringing their wallet? And blame you for embarrassing them when all you wanted was a nice lunch with your daughter. “
Another person, Heavener, added, “Boyfriend right is crazy. And it’s embarrassing.
“If I had decided to show up and eat with my future mother-in-law at a restaurant I wasn’t invited to, I would have offered to pay for her too, or at the very least pay for me and my little one. friend [girlfriend].”
Thesafflower agreed, explaining, “Yeah, seriously. If Simon wanted to convince mum, he should have paid for all their meals. And if he can’t afford it, that’s fine, but he shouldn’t follow a date. mother-daughter waiting for a free lunch.”
Trania86 commented, “If the girl insisted on adding another guest, she should have insisted on paying the bill as well. I love how OP continues to raise their child by sticking to their guns.”
Swamp_Donkey_7 typed: “Sounds like an unemployed moocher who showed up for a free lunch.”
