The winters in the north of the country are unforgiving. If you’re not careful, it can lead to common illnesses like colds and flu. During a pandemic, it is all the more important to take care of yourself and boost your immunity.
If you are a new mom, you need to make sure that you and the baby are comfortable. Dr Sushma Tomar, Obstetrics and Gynecology Consultant, Fortis Hospital Kalyan, shares some tips on winter health care; read on.
1. Dress well: Protect yourself and your baby from the cold by dressing in diapers when you go out. Hats, socks and mittens should be part of your baby’s clothes, even at night. Remember, however, not to over-dress the baby. First assess the temperature of the room. Clothing should not restrict the baby’s movements. For yourself, be appropriately dressed in a fabric that will not rub or damage your baby’s skin when you are wearing it.
2. Hot oil massage: It can be extremely calming and relaxing for you and your little one. You can opt for mustard oil, olive oil, or a combination of almond and olive oil. It is also good for the skin. A warm oil massage after a bath or at bedtime will relax baby and help him sleep better.
3. Maintain the correct temperature: It is important to maintain the correct temperature in the child’s room. Make sure there is enough light and fresh air entering the room.
4. Healthy eating: Soups, salads, green vegetables, grains like bajra and makka are nutritious and beneficial for a new mom. For the baby, it is better to breastfeed, since it is the main source of nutrients. Breast milk protects against a host of infections and diseases. It strengthens the baby’s immune system and the closeness to the mother’s body keeps the baby warm.
5. Good hygiene: Since the baby is near the mother all the time, the lack of hygiene can lead to infections in both mother and child. Wash your hands before carrying the baby. Make sure that people who approach the baby wear a mask.
6. Vaccination: Make sure you and your baby get the necessary vaccines. Talk to your doctor about all relevant vaccinations for your newborn baby. Get your Covid jab, too.
7. Behavior adapted to the Covid: When you venture outside or if there are guests at home, exercise Behavior adapted to Covid to protect you and your new baby. Avoid taking the baby out early in the morning or late at night. If you plan to sit with the baby in the sun, dress it accordingly. The baby’s ears, hands, feet and chest should be properly covered. If going out at night is unavoidable, cover the baby properly. It is also good to keep the baby close to your body.
