Your go-to technique might be to yell at your kid, or give him a timeout and put him on a bad step, but none of that is involved here.

Instead, it’s all about the language you use and the questions you ask your child about their actions.

Dr Kristyn Sommer has 353,600 followers on TikTok and uploaded her parenting advice video with the caption “Best thing in my book”.

She explained, “This is how I discipline my daughter, as a mother with a doctorate in child development.

“I don’t tell her she’s mean, I don’t tell her she’s bad, I don’t tell her that everything she does makes her an inherently bad person or a mean child.

“I very rarely tell him to stop, only when it’s dangerous.

“But what I do instead is really important.”

Dr. Kristyn Sommer uses positive reinforcement to discipline her daughter and focuses on the terminology she uses.

She continued, “I use the terminology: good decisions and bad decisions, for good choices and bad choices.

“So when she does something wrong for the first time, I ask her if she thinks that decision is a good or a bad decision, even if it’s in the moment.

“If she looks confused, I’ll tell her if it was a good or bad decision and give her some suggestions to make a better decision.

“So for example, if she steps on the table, I will ask her, when she is safe, if it is a good or a bad decision. She will say bad.

“So what she’s going to do is come back down. When she chooses to come down, I’ll tell her it was a great decision and I’ll celebrate her.

“That’s how you can use positive reinforcement to discipline.”

Dr. Kristyn Sommer’s video clearly impressed many as it racked up 2.5 million views.

It has 235.5k likes, 3,081 comments and 16.1k shares.

Many parents were impressed with this method and took the comment for granted.

One person said, “That’s what we do in child care. we ask the child “is this choice a safe choice?” then explain to them why it’s not safe if we need it.

Another added: “I swear your mum videos are amazing.”

A third commented: “That’s exactly how I parent…my eldest is 10 and my youngest is 4 and it has never let me down, I now get compliments on my kids.”

Also, I’m a strict parent and people don’t understand my rules – I don’t allow sleepovers and if they don’t eat my food, they don’t eat.

Also, I never force my son to do his homework and I don’t care if he doesn’t get the best grades, life is too short.
