Houston police investigating after newborn found buried in trailer park

Houston police say the remains of a premature baby were discovered at a trailer park in the southwest of the city.

Officers responded to a call around 6:30 a.m. indicating baby remains may be on the property, according to Houston’s KTRK-TV.

Police later spoke to the 17-year-old mother, who said she had given birth to a premature child. Police said they believe the baby was born on Monday, at around 25 weeks pregnant.

The mother told Houston Police Deputy Chief Chandra Hatcher that she went to the hospital after experiencing severe stomach pain. She told medical staff that she had buried her baby near her home.

Hospital staff immediately notified the police, who proceeded to the mobile home park.

“I really want to make sure everyone knows that people find themselves in all types of situations and if it’s possible that a child will be born and the conditions and situations are not suitable to keep that child or s caring for this child, the baby Moses’ law is still in effect,” Hatcher said. “They can take this baby to a fire station or an area hospital and leave this child with someone.”

Homicide detectives continue their investigation. There have been no charges at this stage.
