If you are a new mom, congratulations. You have taken on one of the most important jobs in the world. Being a mother takes almost all of your time and energy, but there is no greater reward than watching your baby grow up healthy.
There are some things every new mom should know to make the experience less stressful, however. If you are a new mom, here are some tips for you.
Ask for help
It doesn’t matter if you have your first, second, third or beyond, one thing is for sure: your life will change. Newborns are labor intensive and there is no way around it. You can read books, watch YouTube videos, or ask your friends who are already parents anything you want, but nothing prepares you for real life like actually being in the trenches with a real newborn baby.
For the first few months, you’re going to have a lot of stuff on your plate – everything from just figuring out how to hold and feed a baby, to sleeping through the night. It’s like every day is a new challenge as you find out what works for your family. Having said that, it can be frustrating when you need help and no one is coming. However, you can’t expect everyone to read your mind. When you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it.
Prepare for baby’s important needs
As a new mom, now is the time to prepare for all of those things that will be important to her. Especially if you are planning on using a stroller, organizing it is something that needs to be taken care of right away. Fortunately, there are a few tips that can make organizing the stroller easier. Like most things, organizing a stroller starts with finding the right bag for it. Almost any type of bag can work, as long as it’s big enough to fit the stroller inside. The bag will become particularly useful during long walks or jogging with your baby.
You should also have toys. Toys should be different shapes and colors in order to get your baby’s attention. Extra clothes, baby bath accessories, and all the important baby needs you need to pack.
Take care of your baby
It’s a great way to bond with your new baby. As a new mom, you may also want to consider having someone else help you around the house. This will give you the time and space you need to spend with your baby. If you are feeling overwhelmed, remember that this stage does not last forever. The first three months are usually the most exhausting, but it gets better. And one day you will find that you don’t have to worry about the slightest noise your baby is making.
Babies are actually quite resilient and can cope with change much easier than we think. Babies love routine, but they also love change (like when you introduce solid foods).
Don’t be afraid to have time for yourself. If you are breastfeeding, understand that you need to give your body a break as well. If your baby sleeps through the night, consider taking advantage of this free time to catch up on sleep or relax in a warm bath. Sometimes new moms feel guilty about “wasting” this time, but it’s important to you in order to keep your stress levels manageable.
Postpartum depression is a real thing
If you think you have postpartum depression, get help right away. The sooner this disease is managed, the better the outcome for you and your baby. Postpartum depression can be difficult to deal with because you may feel guilty that you cannot take care of your baby properly. No new mom wants to think of herself as someone who can’t take care of her baby.
Stick to an early bedtime
You might be exhausted after a hard day caring for your child. It is important to get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. This will make you feel more energetic and stay healthy for your baby. Remember that you need energy to take care of your child. If you don’t get enough sleep, you can injure yourself or your child while you are taking care of your baby.
You need to be mentally alert to take care of your baby. You can’t do this reliably if you are mentally fuzzy. So get enough sleep each night to have the mental sharpness necessary to be a good mom to your newborn baby.
